The National Drywall Clearance Warranty uses both the CPSC- Consumer Products Safety Commission and the NAHB-National Home Builders Association’s current published guidelines for interpretation of “standard industry practices” when considering the remediation of defective drywall. Both the CPSC and the NAHB have supported the position that selective removal of defective drywall is an effective remediation method. Concerns about the accuracy of locating specific Defective Drywall boards remain an issue for the CPSC, but this does not change the validity of selective removal. National relies on XRF to verify the presence of Defective Drywall and believes that this will eventually become the recognized standard within the industry. Neither organization has detailed specifications for selective removal. However, it is reasonable to apply the general guidelines of CPSC and NAHB when considering selective removal along with reasonable steps necessary to contain the area being remediated.
